“I’m too fat!”
She didn’t think so, though it was hard to tell through Amanda’s bulky clothes.
“Amanda, it’s your choice, but remember, part of World Naked Gardening Day for us has always been about being comfortable with our own bodies, of celebrating the naturalness of them.”
Maybe Amanda also craved the normalcy that the unusual family tradition offered because she eventually did join them.
How had she not noticed?
Keeping a brave face through the planting, trying not to stare at the sharp collarbone and raised ribs, she determined to call their physician regarding anorexia that very day.
Clever, well written but very sad ending.

Warmer weather is revealing an uptick in anorexia. Teenagers have had a tough year and disordered eating is one way they can exercise some control.

I hadn’t realized the impact Covid was having on that particular issue, but I do know it’s had a heavy impact on mental well-being overall.

With all the media shaming every imperfection, it’s not surprising. (K)

Yes, and maybe also a control issue in out of control times…

Probably also why people impose all these food restrictions on themselves too. It’s impossible to feed a group of people any more because there’s no foods left that everyone is willing to eat.

Good use of the prompt to highlight a control issue gon awry. Maybe the sunshine, liberation, and soil will shift her mindset.

Amanda . . . 😦 A perfect title, a beautiful story and a sad ending. It’s (really not so) funny how many things in life we can overlook when we don’t see it standing right in front of us and don’t take the time to look.

Heavy clothing can hide a lot. Such a sad disease for so many. Well told, D.

Now that the secret is exposed I am hoping the mom can get this girl the help that she needs. Anorexia is tough but there is some hope for this family.
Thanks!
