This week at Carrot Ranch Charli shared that she had gotten a glimpse of sun and even open water on her lake. Hence, the April 5, 2018 prompt: ‘In 99 words (no more, no less) write a silly sun story. Up north, “sun silly” is the energetic and playful response to returning sunlight. It could also be an April Fool’s jest, a silly story, or a reaction to spring fever. Be silly and write playfully! Go where the prompt leads.’
My response isn’t so giddy or silly as the prompt suggests; some say one should write what one knows… I did laugh out loud when, after starting this piece on yet another gray “sun”rise, I looked out the window to see snow falling. The gray skies provide a canvas for the ever-faithful birds who are trying to paint spring with their colors and with their song. Some day soon perhaps we’ll have a sun day, and can experience the sun sillies.
Myths, stories told to explain a natural phenomenon, a means of making sense of the observable world. But what about the unobservable?
Unconvinced
We don’t believe you, they cry. That is a preposterous story!
It’s true, you insist. It has an incredible mass, which keeps our spinning planet orbiting around it. And, as our planet rotates, you explain, it appears to ‘rise’, bringing daylight and warmth.
Prove it, they demand.
Again you pull out the globe, the flashlight, begin to demonstrate. That’s not proof they groan, and disperse to the gym, the greenhouses, to the light therapy reading rooms.
You sigh. How silly, you muse, that there are still windows. Outside the gray is sprinkled with snow. You struggle to remember otherwise.
A very nice piece, hopefully, the unbelievers will do some more reading.

Yes, as they get their daily dose of vitamin D.
Thanks for coming by!

Lets hope it is just winter, not a climate change permanent effect. How dreadful not to have the sun.

Climate change? Isn’t that alternative science? Remember, it’s all fiction here, all fiction.

Haha. For some people of power it IS all fiction.

Hopefully this remains a silly story and isn’t prophetic! I enjoyed the perspective. Well done. 🙂

Thank you. It is not entirely silly. But the gray days are longer, all good.
